AGGRESSIVE ACTION TO REMOVE LANDFILL-BANNED USED TIRES FROM COMMUNITY

Lower Mainland used tire collection blitz to run April 21-22

VANCOUVER - Over 550 used tires will be collected and removed from Metro Vancouver regional homes and yards during an April 21-22, door-to-door blitz. Spearheaded by Vancouver’s Penfolds Roofing, The Big Eco Tire Toss! campaign offers free, door-to-door used-tire pick-up in an effort to get used tires out of residential backyards, garages and basements.
Many Lower Mainland residents were stuck with used tires in January 2008 and after the Metro Vancouver regional district enacted a landfill ban on used passenger and truck vehicle tires. However, until the Tire Stewardship BC fully implements its Return to Retailer program that aims to have 400 B.C. retailers equipped to receive all used tires and hold them for collection by a recycler, the only other option for residents is to discard the tires illegally, or to haul their used tires to a City of Vancouver transfer station during operating hours.
“We fully support the landfill ban, but we also recognized the problem now faced by residents,” says Penfolds Roofing president Ken Mayhew. “We decided to offer a solution and in the process educate people on the importance of tire recycling and the variety of items that can be built from the used rubber.”
Items manufactured from used tire rubber include the base for artificial turf fields, fatigue mats for the dairy industry and innovative new products like Penfold's EcoRoof® Rubber Shakes. For every roof replaced with EcoRoof® Rubber Shakes, 450 old tires are removed from the landfill. Annually, that's about 20,000 tires diverted into a high-quality, lasting product.
“The Big Eco Tire Toss program has generated such a great response - and has been such an overwhelming success - we were forced to close off requests for used tire pick up a couple days early,” says Mayhew. “We are now ready to begin our used tire collection blitz on April 21.”
Penfold’s Big Eco Tire Toss trailer will be travelling to residences between Lions Bay, White Rock and the Fraser Valley collecting used tires and delivering them to recycling centres for rendering and chipping. “Ultimately, some of this previous waste material we are collecting will be used in our EcoRoof® Rubber Shake product, says Mayhew. “Better recycled and reused than burnt and buried.”
Mayhew says the Big Eco Tire Toss has been so popular and well received; he plans to make it an annual April event.
“We at Penfolds Roofing are pleased to do our part for the community - and for Mother Earth.”

FREE DOOR-TO-DOOR PICK-UP PROGRAM TO GET TOXIC TIRES OUT OF COMMUNITY

Metro Vancouver’s January 2008 landfill ban on passenger and truck vehicle tires has left many residents with used tires in their yards, garages.

VANCOUVER - Residents of the Metro Vancouver regional district are surprised to learn that their used vehicle tires are no longer being accepted as waste items at Vancouver landfills. To help out, and to make a difference in the community and on the environment, Penfolds Roofing is offering a free used tire collection service this April.

“Old tires are no longer being burned or buried at a landfill,” says Penfolds Roofing president Ken Mayhew. “Instead, used tires are being recycled into a variety of items, ranging from the base for artificial turf fields to fatigue mats for the dairy industry to roofing tiles.”

However, until the Tire Stewardship BC fully implements its Return to Retailer program that aims to have 400 B.C. retailers equipped to receive all used tires and hold them for collection by a recycler, the only other option for residents is to haul their used tires to a City of Vancouver transfer station during operating hours. Four tires can be dropped off, but they must be placed into one of several recycling bins.

Penfolds Roofing, which is promoting The Big Eco Tire Toss! used-tire pick up program across the Lower Mainland, is discovering residents with used tires have no idea on how to dispose of them safely and legally.

“We are finding that a lot of residents have used tires and most do not have the time to research a drop off location, drive to a transfer station and then wait in line,” says Mayhew. “The fact we will arrive at their home and collect up to six used tires free of charge has generated a great response.”

To participate in The Big Eco Tire Toss! - and have up to six used tires per residence collected free of charge - residents between Abbotsford, White Rock and Lion's Bay should visit www.penfoldsroofing.com and register. Participants can also register to win a new set of tires and a vehicle tune up by Minit-Tune & Brake Auto Centre.

The Big Eco Tire Toss event will culminate April 21-22 when Penfolds Roofing will travel through the Lower Mainland collecting hundreds of used tires.

“Many of these tires will eventually be chipped and recycled into innovative new products such as Penfold’s EcoRoof® Rubber Shakes,” says Mayhew. For every roof replaced with EcoRoof® Rubber Shakes, 450 old tires are removed from the landfill. Annually, that’s about 20,000 tires diverted into a high quality, lasting product.

“We see a great opportunity in diverting former waste items back into the production stream. It benefits the community and the environment, says Mayhew. “So far, the response to The Big Eco Tire Toss! has been awesome.”

Roofing Q&A

With Ken Mayhew

Q: My roof has six ventilation openings that lead to the attic. You recommend I have eight ventilation openings. Why, and how important are roof vents? M.E. Olsen, Burnaby, B.C.

A: Proper ventilation is a key element in roof longevity and energy savings. An improper ventilation system can also greatly compromise a roof’s integrity. At Penfolds Roofing, we always will ask to see your attic space and we verify and measure existing ventilation openings and strive to diagnose any potential problems. We believe that roofing warranties are worthless if proper ventilation is not addressed.

Ventilation is a simple concept. The idea is to vent as much of the attic out as you can to cut down on heat and possible moisture buildup. When you air your house out you know that more windows work better than a few. Opening one window up does nothing. Instead, open many and get a cross breeze through the house. Air can’t go out one window unless it comes in somewhere else so you open windows on both ends of the house.

In the attic, cool air comes in the bottom of the attic, it rises up the roof as the roof heats up the air and then leaves at the top of the attic because hot air is less dense than cool air. Air will not leave the attic unless other air comes in to replace it. This means you need to get venting at the bottom of the roof which is usually soffit vents - the soffit being under the overhang of the roof edge.

We provide you with a written ventilation recommendation based upon government specifications. With this form and your new roof, you have added value and assurance that your roofing system will last the test of time.

ZipLok promises function and eye-catching form

Unique high-profile installations: No longer just uninspired institutional

Sensible and functional are the adjectives usually associated with metal roofing. You can now add stylish and eye-catching as ZipLok Roofing ™, a brand carried by Penfold’s Roofing, is creating a buzz around the world.

In London, England, ZipLok Roofing’s™ application as the main roof on the new Wembley Stadium is being heralded for its industrial chic and design. The highly highly prestigious contract, worth approximately £4.5 million, consists of approximately 40,000m² of Ziplock aluminium standing seam sheets to the fixed and retractable areas.

In Glasgow, Scotland, the 5,200 m² Audi Centre of Excellence is the world’s largest Audi centre. The ultra-modern, new landmark Audi retail centre, located minutes from Glasgow's airport is a three-storey, 110ft tall building topped by some 3,000 m² of Ziplok standing seam aluminum roofing. The product is a zip-up system designed to offer weather resistance and durability. The halter design complements the design of the liner providing a low possibility of error in setting the roof. This has also allowed for fast laying of the profiles, which were curved on site. The aesthetic result is stunning, generating accolades from around the world.

All ZipLok Roofing ™ products sold by Penfolds are backed by a Lifetime Warranty. As many business and home owners are realizing, metal roofing is probably the most economical roofing material because it can be the last roof a building owner will ever need to install. As well, ZipLok Roofing ™ offers a long-life alternative to problem-plagued roofing materials such as asphalt, clay, wood and slate.

B.C. building and homeowners are also looking to ZipLok Roofing ™ for its aesthetic benefits. Penfold’s has many architecturally inspired installations from mountain chalets to White Rock residences. Homeowners who would never have considered a steel roof are now being won over by not only the practicality of ZipLok Roofing ™, but the beauty and possibilities.

Prepare your roof for winter

Check on, shingles, roof flashing and gutters to ensure home stays dry

Keep water, ice and debris out and heat in is the goal. Unfortunately, most homeowners fail to ensure their roofs do just that.

As you read this, we have had our first significant fall/winter storm of the season. Expect more to come. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that if your roof is not leaking, there are no problems.

Here a few steps to take before the next high winds, rains and even snow hits B.C.:

Examine your ceiling for water stains and, if possible, the underside of your roof in your attic. If there are any Active Leaks, a qualified contractor should be notified to make repairs. If the roof system is under warranty, the manufacturer should also be notified of any leaks.

If you are able to and your roof covering allows it, get on the roof. Walk over the roof area to see if anything looks out of place, such as blistering, missing shakes or shingles, ridges in the membrane or eroded areas.. If these deficiencies are occurring, they should be corrected as soon as possible by a qualified contractor.

Check all penetration flashings – the metal skirts that wrap mainstack, sewer, septic and drain vents. These flashings must not be eroded and should be checked to be sure they are sealed and secured.

Studies have shown that a majority of roof covering failures originate at the perimeter of the roof when the wind works its way under the edge, frequently deforming the edge flashing and then rolling back the roof cover. In order to prevent this from occurring, roof perimeter flashing must be well anchored and of sufficient gauge or thickness to resist anticipated rain, temperature and wind effects. Also, ensure all roof-related metal secured, joint laps are sealed and there are no missing components.

In B.C., poor drainage is one of the most common problems during winter. Make sure all drains are open and allowing water to exit; clean all debris in and around drains that could plug strainers and restrict water flow; check gutters and downspouts to make sure they are secured and that all debris is removed; if heat tapes are in place in the gutters, downspouts or drains, make sure they are in working order.

Finally, look for deficiencies in ductwork, door seals, open joints in walls, skylights and penetrations through walls.

If you have recurring problems with pine needles, leaves and branches clogging roof drains, you should consider having a professional cut the trees back, so needles and leaves won't get into the gutters.

If, during you investigations you encounter problems, contact Penfolds and request a free roof estimate. A Penfolds’ Roof Specialist will contact you shortly to schedule an appointment to discuss your roofing needs in detail.

Penfolds Roofing helps Tri-City family in need

New roof, new hope

In mid-October, a team of volunteers from Penfolds Roofing joined with members of Coquitlam’s Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist Church to renovate a home and raise a new roof for Gord and Kim Penner whose son Jesse was stabbed to death at a house party in February 2006.

Inspired by the TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, members of the Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist community church set out to help the Tri-City family in need.

New windows, doors and exterior paint brightened the home. Yellow glass panels flanking the front door were updated, and a new concrete path to the front door was poured. Inside, the transformation included fresh paint in every room and new bamboo, carpet and tiles on the floors. Outside, new gutters led to a new roof and Penfolds Roofing was only too happy to help.

Working with materials donated by Brad Gibson of Cedar Grove, Shaun Mayhew acted as the technical advisor, Matthias Rost acted as the field supervisor, Dong Esquibel and Esing Esquibel served as crew leaders. Jerrick Esquibel, Atilano Esquibel, Raquel Esquibel, Lemuel Esquibel, Monsanto Esquibel, Jayson Masuela, Gilbert Malot, Greg Falguera, Bernard Balais and Marvin Estrella proceeded to re-roofed the home in a single day.

On the October 22, the work was done and the rains came down. There were no leaks reported in spite of the weather and the entire installation was completed in one day!

Protecting your home from wildfires starts with the roof

B.C. homeowners must pay heed to California wildfires

October’s California wildfires forced tens of thousands from their homes and caused hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property damage. Most of the burnt and charred structures were private residences located in urban/wildland interface areas. Homeowners built next to forests, sage and parklands for the aesthetic and solitude. Most never expected to be rousted and overrun by raging, Santa Ana wind-driven flames.

Just four years ago we had interface fires of our own in Kelowna. An entire subdivision was leveled and a mountain side ravaged.

The images remain vivid: desperate Californians placing water sprinklers on their roofs and, in 2003, Kelowna residents frantically spraying water on shake roofs as flames ominously descended from Okanagan Mountain.

On the North Shore, the Okanagan Valley and on Vancouver Island development continues to encroach on wilderness areas. Homeowners must recognize and then mitigate the risk such development poses and especially when reroofing or building a new house.

Under the 1998 BC Building Code, roofing materials are assigned a Class A (the highest rating), B or C fire-resistance rating.

Aside from a thatch roof - a rarity in North America – the most fire-susceptible type of roofing is cedar shakes and shingles. Beautiful and once ubiquitous on the West Coast, cedar is also a great fuel for fire. Burning embers from a nearby house or brush fire - or even your own chimney - may start a fire on your roof. However, there are now cedar shakes and shingles available that have been treated with fire retardants. Depending on the treatment, shake roofs can now achieve a Class B or C fire rating.

Metal roofing, including aluminum, copper, zinc and steel, is the longest-life and most fire-resistance roofing. And since metal reflects 70 per cent of the sun’s energy, heat retention is minimized and the home is cooler in the summer. Penfold’s ZipLok Metal Roofing is also a long-life alternative to problem-plagued roofing materials such as clay, wood and slate; is ideal for replacing low slope tar and gravel roofs and is especially effective in highly forested areas.

The main types of nonmetallic roofing material used in B.C. includes fibreglass and asphalt shingles, a variety of membranes for flat roofs and a range of tiles, cement and innovative new products such as rubber shakes. And with this wide variety of base materials comes a multiplicity of fire-resistance ratings.

By far, the most popular roofing covering in B.C. is fibreglass and asphalt shingles. While most consumers cannot tell the difference and most assume asphalt is asphalt, when it comes to fire prevention there is a big difference. Most organic asphalt shingles - built around a heavy, asphalt-saturated paper base – achieve a Class C fire rating. In-organic fiberglass asphalt shingles, such as Penfold’s CedarTwin Fibreglass Shingles, are built around a fiberglass mat and have a Class A fire rating. A natural alternative to cedar shake or asphalt shingle, CedarTwin Fibreglass Shingles offer the appearance of cedar at a fraction of the cost.

Growing in popularity are roofs made recycled materials, such as Penfold’s EcoRoof Rubber Shakes. Manufactured from old, ground up car tires, the rendered and liquefied rubber has coloring added before being injected into a cedar shake-shaped mold. The result is a roof that resembles a cedar shake roof that is also fire resistant, moss resistant, lightweight and almost indestructible.

Along with a robust, fire-resistant roof, there are other roof-related actions homeowners should consider when looking to mitigate wilderness interface fire risk. These include removing dead leaves from the roof and gutter. If the leaves are dry, they are going to burn. As well, proper roof cleaning and maintenance is required if there are a lot of overhead and/or large trees nearby. Allowing piles of dry pine needles to accumulate on a roof is akin to stacking kindling on a roof.

We live in a much wetter climate than Southern California. However, as we all witnessed during the summers of 2005 and 2003, hot, dry and fiery conditions are only a couple rain-free weeks away.

Homeowners must be prepared for the worst.

Contact Penfolds and request a free roof estimate and discuss the fire-resistant options. A Penfolds’ Roof Specialist will contact you shortly to schedule an appointment to discuss your roofing needs in detail.

Penfolds Launches Its New Website

Penfolds Roofing is the leading roof replacement company in BC. In order to better communicate our services and capabilities to our customers we have rewritten our entire website. The site is designed to let all our customers and potential customers see and experience what can be done to their roof. Our focus is the "Roof as a System" and the web site has been written to accommodate this.

Penfolds Opens Its Own Training School

Penfolds Roofing has recognized that the labour pool in Canada and especially BC is becoming very limited in supply. The standards of Penfolds installations are very high and the need for employing people from outside the industry and even the country has become a way to secure personnel to deliver the final product in the way it is designed to.

Consequently Penfolds Roofing purchased another commercial property specifically for this purpose. In addition Penfolds have employed a full-time trainer to teach the specific skills to both Roofing applicators as well as External Technical Advisors.
